Once a proud Senator in Imperial Rome, Marius was kidnapped by the Druids and made a blood god and protector of the Queen and King of the vampires.  Through his eyes we see the fall of pagan Rome to the Emperor Constantine, the horrific sack of the Eternal City at the hands of the Visigoths, and the vile aftermath of the Black Death.

Ultimately restored by the beauty of the Renaissance, Marius becomes a painter, living dangerously yet happily among mortals, and gives his heart to the great master Botticelli, to the bewitching courtesan Bianca, and to the mysterious young apprentice Armand.  But it is in our own time, deep in the jungle, when Marius will meet his fate seeking justice from the oldest vampires in the world.

CRAIG'S REVIEW

What can I say about this book? Well in fact there are a lot of things I could say about this book and since Marius is another vampire character that I like alongside Lestat, I will say what needs to be said.

This is yet another classic tale by the only true author of vampire's in my opinion.  And Blood and Gold is an excellent tale that spans over two thousands years during which he meets Botticelli a famous artist of long ago and his experiences with the Black Death and the plague.  It is amazing how Rice can manage to write this down in great detail giving the reader the fact that he or she is with Marius on his journey through his life.  It is well written and I would recommend anyone to read it (would also advise to read The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of The Damned) as these two only scrape the service or these two other stories.  My favorite is still "Merrick" but nerveless this does go into my favorite category.

What more can I say then that you need to read this tale as it will have you wanting more and more.  Plus some old favorites return near the end of the book!
