PLOT
Amongst the waterfronts, the skets, and the gilded ballrooms lived a unique people, descended from African slaves and from the French and Spanish who had enslaved them. They were the gens de couleur libre - the Free People of Colour - fierce and proud, neither black nor white, but caught between the two, free and yet not free.
Out of this race came Marcel, the mesmeric copper-skinned youth adored by all yet dreaming of distant lands, and his sister Marie, who longed for love and marriage in a world ready to sell her to the highest bidder. Like all their people, they were caught perilously between the worlds of master and slave, privilege and oppression, passion and pain.

CRAIG'S REVIEW
This book is an excellent piece of literature that gives you insight into how people of the gen de couleur might have lived in those times in New Orleans. Don't mistake me on the fact that this is a work of fiction but it is based upon the divide between the whites and the blacks that had a strong presents in that world at that particular time period. Anne has a talent to give the reader the opportunity to believe that these things are real and that you may take on the persona of Marcel who struggles to establish himself as an independent man or his sister Marie who seeks the comfort of the man she loves and the hatred for her mother. There isn't a bad thing about this book that I can see it is well written the characters as all Anne's characters have charisma that will stay with you all your lifetime. I well recommend this book to anyone who wants to maybe learn a bit about the gen de couleur or who just wants to read a good period drama. It is also well to note that his has been turned into a mini-series, but unfortunately I have not seen this on UK television.
